Thank you, Dave, for talking about fuel reduction! That's so critical and so overlooked. A good example of fire management is how aboringinal Australians manage the Northern Territory. And yes, it's burn, baby, burn, but it is beneficial and effective.

Gigi, I hear you about Nationwide. They are like Shelter Insurance, they have a fire map, they can't write policies outside of it and that's that. You have to think of the insurance industry as Great Britain in 1919 when it was it was the height of the empire. Since then, a slow retreat from around the world (India, and other huge colonies) The insurance industry at the moment is retreating from the big states Florida/California. The little states are next, the intermountain West, and the Gulf Coast states. From there, who knows. If Colorado can get it's house in orders with proscribed burns, effective remediation plans around structures and perhaps a full-time fire force working year round on fuels reduction and fire fighting then we can save the industry by creating a profitable place to write policies. If we insist they operate unprofitably they'll leave, or go bust..

We were Nationwide custoners for 49 years. Last fall we were notified they would be dropping our Homeowners Insurance as we live in a "Wildfire Zone". We have 4 trees on our 1/2-acre property; a Green Ash in our front yard set away from the house, a Purple Ash in the back near the back corner of our property, and two Crabapple Trees, one on each side set away from the house. On one side we have a former church with a gravel parking lot,on the other side we have a neighbor with comparable trees and landscaping, in front we have a road, and across the road another neighbor on a comparable 1/2 acre lot. In back past our 1/4 acre naked backyard there is a hayfield. (Your writer Dave Marston should be familiar with our location; we live 3 houses up from his mom.) Nationwide refused to even hear our appeal; said their decision was final. They lost a custome of nearly 50 years; we obtained Homeowners Insurance from State Farm and also moved our vehicles, trailer and RV insurance to them. I will never again refer anybody to Nationwide.

As a USFS employee in wildland fire I think this piece is spot on! Lockwood seems to blame insurers for requiring her to do the right thing in her Wildland Urban Interface and Geslin seems to blame his predicament on his living too "close to Forest Service land". The forest ownership isn’t to be blamed in his case. It's that it's actually forest and that it can burn catastrophically. It's the homeowner's responsiblity to have situational awareness on where they buy or build their home. Finally, Kevin Parks has excellent advice for WUI dwellers.
