Dorothy-I just finished reading your article as published in the Vail Daily today. My sentiments exactly. Although I have lived most of the past 35 years in Colorado (half in the Vail Valley and half Colorado Springs or Denver...and halftime in Whitefish, Montana for 5 or 6 years-and have a stepson in Bozeman) I could visualize myself in your car. I bought some land overlooking Colorado Springs over 50 years ago in part because of the wild turkeys that traversed the unpaved roads; and, of course, am quite familiar with MT 89 and Glacier NP. Remember the old saying "slow down and smell the roses"? I close with a quote from a John Denver song of 1975..."Life in the mountains is living in danger of too many people, too many machines."...I fervently hope that I am not one of those "too many people".

Dorothy: There are a couple of things at work here. We have similar car and bicycle speeding problems here in rural Virginia (I live on a grave road system favored by Gravel Grinder bike riders many of whom who have a strong attitude of 'ownership.') Approximately 1/3 of the deer killed in Virginia each year are from car collisions. Part of the issue is folks with a 'fear of being left out' - - someone else might do something first. Part of it is a sense of entitlement - - the road came with the car I bought. We have lost the benefits of forest bathing. Don't know how we will get if back.
