Were there structures at risk? Were lives in imminent danger? Perhaps there is missing information that would change my opinion but as it is it sounds a bit like the 20th century fear of all wildfires.

Great story with a good outcome. It still baffles my feeble mind that backcountry users (the three huddled around the campfire) continually ignore fire bans while throughout the west millions of acres are burning.
